If you don’t know Kenny Dorham, you need to know Kenny Dorham. And if you haven’t heard Afro-Cuban, you need to hear Afro-Cuban! For whatever reason, trumpeter and vocalist McKinley Howard “Kenny” Dorham seems to have been left out of a lot of the prestige, limelight, and adulation of his peers from the bebop and big band era. But he was no less influential to crafting much of the jazz music many hold as standards or classic today. He’s played alongside everyone from Thelonious Monk and Milt Jackson, to Max Roach and Dizzy Gillespie. Additionally, Dorham, went on to record over a dozen albums as a leader, with Afro-Cuban being the second in 1955. The percussive element present throughout the album serve as a backbone that sturdies and steadies Kenny’s trumpet work. At certain points on songs like “Lotus Flower” and “Basheer’s Dream” the composition is so well done that it sounds as if the instruments are conversing with one another and inviting you into the conversation too. If you’re a serious collector or want want jazz that’s slightly off the beaten path but still amazing, Afro-Cuban is a must add to your collection. This reissue for Blue Note’s 75th Anniversary is the 1957 version of the album that includes three song on the B-side that were not included on the 1955 release.
