In 1997, Erykah Badu released her debut album, Baduizm, and it was a hit that left listeners with so many questions. For one, most outside of Texas were relatively unaware of Erykah prior to her album’s release, a big gamble most record labels never take. Second, her aesthetic drew early fans into not only what was the beginning of the “neo-soul” sound but, also, a sort of pseudo afro-futurist vibe that signified that she wasn’t to be lumped in with every other pop artist. Then, most important for the industry, her singles were climbing to the top of charts, albums were selling like crazy, and her shows were selling out…pre-social media era. She captured millions quite quickly in the U.S. and in other countries with her “I could be your best friend/cousin/sister/girlfriend” relatability. Baduizm set the stage for what would become quite a successful career for the woman who seems to tour non-stop even today.
