In the mid-1990’s, producers Nick Gold and Ry Cooder began to develop an idea of a compilation of Cuban and African guitarists. Sadly, the African musicians were unable to make the trip but the album was recorded with the Cuban musicians that were available to contribute. The name given to them (and the project) was Buena Vista Social Club. Recorded in only six days at Havana’s 1950s vintage Egrem Studios, the songs flow with intimacy and ease among the musicians playing on them. Things went so well in the studio that most song were recorded in only one or two takes! The album includes a wide variety of Cuban styles, from the city sounds of Havana to the country style of Santiago, each with the soul of Cuban shining through. That soul is felt on songs like “De Camino a La Vereda” and “Candela” where the Cuban and African styles and influences merge seamlessly. Buena Vista Social Club captured magic on tape and you’d do well to add it in wax format to your collection!
