Dorothy's Harp - Dorothy Ashby

Dorothy's Harp - Dorothy Ashby

Dorothy Ashby’s music popped up in again in the later half of 2018 with a few prominent podcasters and bloggers rediscovering her 1968 album Afro Harping. However, those that know have been on Ashby’s music for quite some time, namely hip-hop producers who have quietly sampled her work over the years. Dorothy’s Harp was recorded at Ter Mar studios in Chicago in 1969, shortly after the release of Afro Harping. The harp itself doesn’t get a whole lot of recognition and that has been a similar case with Dorothy and her music until recent years. She master her craft and more than deserves the recent interest she’s been receiving. With that said, Dorothy’s Harp has some amazing vibes in the form of both jazz standards and original tunes. Some with a funky vibe and others with a bit of a bossa nova zing, Ashby expresses her range on the oft forgotten instrument while also leaving plenty of entry points for even the most novice of listeners.
