A vertebrae in the bossa nova backbone.

Originally released in 1963 Stan Getz combined forces with João Gilberto and the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim for the now classic Getz/Gilberto album. This was the follow up to the bossa nova success of Jazz Samba and soon became the defining LP of the genre. “The Girl from Ipanema” is no doubt one of the greatest bossa nova and Jazz songs to-date and was an early landmark in the careers of everyone involved. And, let’s be clear, it this wouldn’t be the case without the vocals of none other that Astrud Gilberto, spouse of João Gilberto. Astrud also appears on “Corcovado,” making her mark as well on one of the truly essential jazz recordings of that era. Between her vocal contributions and Antonio Carlos Jobim’s vocals and piano work, the Getz/Gilberto album stands in a class of its own.
