jazz at the College of the Pacific - Dave Brubeck Quartet

Not an HBCU homecoming, but it still hits though!

This recording of a December 14, 1953 performance was, for Brubeck, all-too-familiar. While he had played there before, it was because, in 1938 Dave was an undergraduate student at College of the Pacific. Even then professors and classmates recount his experimental nature with composition and always seeking to push past conventional definition of a genre or sound. Joined by Paul Desmond (alto sax), Ron Crotty (bass), and Joe Dodge (drums), jazz at the College of the Pacific became something unique even within a “hometown” setting. “All the Things You Are” starts the show off in an upbeat tempo while the rolling piano work in Laura bring it back down in to a more mellow space. “Lullaby in Rhythm” closed out the show’s third encore, bumping the pace just a bit but, also, artfully displaying the strengths of each musician in well-placed solos. All of that, and much more, pressed on a translucent red vinyl record!

This LP is a part of The Phyllis Collection and, though it’s seen some use, is still in good (G) condition.
