Red Top - Gene Ammons

Red Top - Gene Ammons

The best of Jug’s early days on the tenor sax.

Add to Cart

A little more in-tune with the melodic side of jazz than some of his counterparts, Eugene “Jug” Ammons used his disposition to carve out his own lane with his tenor saxophone. After studying under greats like Walter Dyett in Chicago as a youngster, Ammons went on to tour, play with, and lead groups including John Coltrane, Sonny Stitt, Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, and many more. His career was shortchanged a bit by two prison sentences but, he still managed to produce amazing music after returning home from each one. Gene passed in 1974 due to complications with cancer but some of his best earlier recordings from the Savoy label are compiled on this LP for us to enjoy and remember him/his work.

This used LP is in near-mint (NM) condition and the sleeve is in very good plus (VG+) condition.
