There are some musicians that just vibrate higher. Angel is not only on her own wavelength but demands you come up to where she is. With clarinet in hand and ancestors in her wind, The Oracle is one of the rare albums in recent times that truly takes the listener on a journey from front to back. Angel seems to have found the perfect, delicate balance of honoring the past on songs like “Destination (Dr. Yusef Lateef)” and “What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black (Dr. Margaret Burroughs)” while also pushing the whole of music forward with “Capetown.” It’s an audible endeavor that shouldn’t be limited to the colorful adjectives someone behind a keyboard can come up with. It’s truly and album that needs to be experienced (also, if you have the honor, go see her perform live!). That said, get on board and get this in your collection asap.
